General
Information
Heidelberg Study Center
The program is administered by
the
American Junior Year at Heidelberg College in Ohio in
cooperation with Saint Louis University.Since all
instruction is in German, your language proficiency will
increase rapidly. You will discover how these new language
skills allow you to assimilate German life and culture in a
way that would be impossible to experience otherwise.
You can come to Heidelberg for a full academic year or
for just one semester. Regardless of your major, the program
staff will help you tailor a course of studies to fit your
individual interests and needs.
In the AJY Year study center, located on
Universitätsplatz in the heart of the old city, you can
relax with friends between classes, watch television or read
newspapers, use computers for term papers or homework
assignments, cook in the kitchen -- everything, of course,
auf Deutsch!
Courses Available
Upon arrival, student take a
4-week preliminary course. Shortly before the start of the
University of Heidelberg semester, a German Language Proficiency
exam is administered to all incoming foreign students.
All instruction is in German.
You may take courses at the University of Heidelberg and at the
American Junior Year Student Center. Course offerings at the
University cover a wide range of topics. An official University
catalog is published shortly before the start of each semester.
Because course offerings fluctuate and there is no guarantee
that a course will be given in any given semester, you should
plan to take as many required courses on your home campus before
and after your stay at the University of Heidelberg.
You can find a guide about what
courses are offered
here.
Housing
In your dorm you will learn the German language and the
German culture you cannot learn from a textbook or in the
classroom. Rather than placing you together with other
Americans, AJY housing is spread out across Heidelberg. You will
live in a dormitory or in a shared apartment (Wohngemeinschaft)
with German students. This enables you to speak German
informally with your neighbors -- from before that first cup of
coffee in the morning until the last late-night chat in the
evening.
All dorm rooms are fully
equipped and have access to a shared kitchen and to shared bath
facilities. Most rooms are singles and housing is usually
centrally located, requiring only a short walk or bus ride to
and from classes or other activities. Your room will be
available from the day the group arrives in Heidelberg for the
duration of your enrollment in the program.
Students usually prepare
breakfast on their own. For noon and evening meals, they may
take advantage of the very reasonably-priced offerings at the
University cafeteria. Since all rooms have access to cooking
facilities, many students cook occasional meals with fellow
students in their apartments or dorms.
Program Fees
The total cost of the program fees, including tuition and
room (no meals), and some excursions is $18,000 per semester for the 2008-2009 academic year.
All SLU financial aid and scholarships, with the exception
of those geared specifically towards housing, will go with the
student. In addition, a mandatory $250 international
insurance fee per semester will be added to the student's
account.
